NOÉMI CHOTARD
Between exoticism and paradoxes: a visual exploration of the insular gaze
Originally from the island of Réunion, Noémi Chotard develops an artistic practice around the notion of exoticism and its ambiguity. Through her works, she questions how island territories are perceived from the outside, often fantasized or idealized, while exploring the perspective that the inhabitants themselves have on these representations.
Currently traveling in Valencia (Spain) from 2024 to 2025, her work is nourished by a dual influence: that of the landscapes and Spanish cultures she discovers and that of the memories and references rooted in her native island. This dialogue between two worlds is reflected in her pictorial approach, where she plays with the contrasts between the real and the imaginary, the cliché and the intimate, the local and the universal.
By experimenting with colors, textures, and shapes, Noémi Chotard creates compositions where hybrid landscapes become spaces of inquiry and poetry. Her art, both sensitive and critical, invites us to reconsider our own visions of exoticism and to question the construction of narratives surrounding so-called "paradisiacal" territories.
